Istion's Nafplion Charter Base
Nafplion is the first capital of modern Greece and a seaport town in the Peloponnese that stands out for its charming and picturesque character.
One can visit Nafplion from Athens International Airport which is approximately 2.00 hours and 171 km away or via Kalamata International Airport which is approximately 1.30 hrs and 138 km away.
Nafplion has recently grown into a major tourist destination by offering a journey through time with a plethora of ancient & historic sites such as: Bourtzi Castle, Palamidi Fortress, Acronafplia, Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus, Mycenian Palace, Nemea’s Stadium.
The most photographed or instagram-friendly spot of Nafplio –and its point of reference as well– is Bourtzi, a Venetian small fortress.
In the summer you can reach the fortress by boat departing regularly from the port. If you are lucky enough you may even be able to attend one of the fascinating festivals taking place on the islet!
The twisting labyrinthine streets, heritage buildings, multicoloured flower beds and a sophisticated atmosphere that’s a million miles from a typical tourist destination entice Athenians to flood the city on weekends and wander around the narrow alleyways among the cascades of bougainvillea, palm and pines trees, before making their way down to the beach. Although widely known for the beauty and the culture of its city, the beaches of Nafplion are always a happy surprise to the a new visitor!
Be it sandy or pebbled, busy or remote, Nafplio's beaches are definitely worth a visit, offering a refresing break to your cultured trip.
While you are here:
Follow a dream trail to discover Náfplio’s precious gems starting from the medieval Old Town, the narrow cobblestone alleys, the neoclassical well preserved mansions with the Bougainvillea trees adorning their yards and balconies and the Turkish fountains.
For the occasional beach lover, just a 10-minute walk south from Palamidi castle hill will lead you to Karathona Beach, a mesmerizing cove, dotted with cafes and traditional taverns along the water.
At this 'Blue Flag' accredited beach, you can rest assured you’ll be swimming in some of the clearest waters you have encountered in your lifetime. Also popular in the area, are Arvanitia and Neraki Beach.
• Tail the sunset
Watching the sunset anywhere in particular in Greece is always captivating but at Nafplion is always a little more enticing. A few good spots where you might enjoy it with a wonderful and unobstructed view are: across the marina, at the clock tower at the fortress of Acronafplia where you can enjoy the entire marvel of the Argolic Gulf. Bourtzi Castle is also a good spot to keep in mind.
• Fill your Appetite.
The local cuisine of Nafplion is as rich as one whould expect from a Greek region. Enriched with exquisite local dishes the town of Nafplio is home to many restaurants with extensive menus.
Whether you’re looking for a casual late-night meal with the family or a romantic dinner for two, you will find what you’re looking for.
The old trails also lead to the rugged coastline in the Eastern Peloponnese, with numerous coastal towns and hidden paradises awaiting to be explored.
Starting from Nafplion definitely visit: the Monemvasia medieval town, the Fjord-like Porto Gerakas, the quaint isolated fishing village of Kyparissi, the quiet port of Plaka, right under the historical Leonidio, the Marina of Astros with modern port-facilities are few within range.
Alternatively, the popular islands of Spetses and Hydra, along with the beautiful Porto-Heli bay, Koilada & Ermioni supplement the approachable options for sailing around this fabulous area!
