Raising Awareness
at Sea: Istion x
Seal Greece

This past summer, Istion Yachting proudly partnered with Seal Greece in a mission dedicated to protecting one of Greece’s most iconic yet endangered species: the Mediterranean monk seal
September 10th, 2025

With fewer than a thousand Monachus monachus seals left worldwide - nearly half of them in Greek waters, awareness is a crucial first step toward protection. Mediterranean monk seals depend on quiet, undisturbed marine caves to rest, breed, and raise their pups. During the busy summer months, however, these habitats can be especially sensitive to human presence, making awareness and respectful sailing practices all the more important.

The Initiative

Throughout July and August 2025, Istion placed awareness flags on every yacht departing from Athens, while also sending materials to Volos and Skiathos; gateways to the Sporades, home to the Natura protected marine park. Every guest received a badge, a flag, and a sticker featuring a QR code designed to spark curiosity and conversation during their sailing journeys.

Scanning the sticker unlocked a browser-based AR experience, requiring no downloads and working seamlessly on any phone. At its heart was Mona, the monk seal, a friendly digital guide who welcomed sailors in multiple languages and shared practical tips on how to behave respectfully in sensitive marine ecosystems. With the help of GPS, the tool also alerted users when they were near a protected monk seal habitat, turning each sailing excursion into an educational and interactive experience.

Engagement on the Water

Guests embraced the initiative enthusiastically. The AR tool quickly became a fun part of sailing days, sparking discussions on board and raising awareness in ports of call. Families in particular found Mona’s guidance engaging, while experienced sailors valued the real-time, location-specific advice.

The initiative was not only informative, but also impactful, transforming a day at sea into an opportunity for meaningful connection with the marine environment.

Our Broader Commitment

For Istion, the Seal Greece partnership is more than a seasonal effort; it’s a reflection of the company’s corporate social responsibility philosophy and ongoing commitment to marine conservation. Environmental awareness has long been part of Istion’s approach, from encouraging low-impact sailing practices to supporting initiatives that safeguard Greece’s unique biodiversity.

By embedding conservation tools and visible symbols such as flags on our yachts, it became apparent that responsible sailing and unforgettable holidays can go hand in hand.

A Lasting Message

Though the summer initiative has concluded, its impact remains. Numerous sailors left Greece not only with memories of crystal-clear waters and island sunsets, but also with a deeper appreciation for the fragile balance of its marine ecosystems.

As Istion looks ahead, one thing is clear: when businesses, NGOs, and travelers unite around a cause, even the smallest symbols: a flag, a badge, a sticker, can carry the weight of meaningful change.

Contribute to the change, not the challenge.

Together, with Seal Greece, let’s #RespectTheSeal.
