Shaping the Future of Greek Yachting & Maritime Tourism
April 27th, 2026

The Greek yachting industry continues to attract international attention, and Istion Yachting remains actively present in the conversation shaping its future.

Recently, our CEO and Greek Yachting Association's President, Mr. Ioannis Kourounis, was featured in two important media interviews: on ERT News and NewMoney, offering a clear and forward-looking perspective on the current state and future priorities of Greek maritime tourism and yachting.

In both discussions, the focus was not only on market performance, but on the deeper structural elements that define long-term growth: infrastructure, institutional framework, sustainability, and human capital.

A sector in motion and in transition

Speaking to ERT News in the context of MEDYS 2026, Mr. Ioannis Kourounis highlighted the dynamic evolution of the Greek yachting sector, underlining its increasing international reach and the importance of collaboration between industry stakeholders and institutions.

At the same time, he emphasized that growth must be supported by a more coherent framework, particularly in areas such as marina capacity, regulatory clarity, and coordinated development of maritime infrastructure across key destinations in Greece.

Infrastructure, regulation & talent: the three pillars of growth

In his interview with NewMoney, the Istion's CEO & GYA's President further expanded on the key challenges and opportunities facing the sector today.

He outlined three core priorities for the sustainable development of Greek yachting:

  1. Infrastructure development, with emphasis on marinas, moorings, and maintenance facilities that support a truly connected cruising network

  2. A clearer and more functional institutional framework, that reduces complexity and enhances competitiveness

  3. Education and specialization of human capital, ensuring that the industry continues to evolve with skilled professionals across both onboard and shore-based roles

According to him, yachting is not an isolated activity but a powerful economic ecosystem that supports multiple sectors, especially in island communities, creating a strong multiplier effect for the Greek economy.

Greece as a global yachting reference point

Both interviews also reinforced a key message: Greece remains one of the most attractive and authentic destinations in global yachting.

With its geography, maritime tradition, and growing professional ecosystem, the country is uniquely positioned to strengthen its role as a leading hub for luxury yacht charter and maritime tourism.

Events like MEDYS further amplify this visibility, bringing together international brokers, industry leaders, and decision-makers who directly influence global charter demand.

Looking ahead

As the industry continues to evolve, Istion Yachting & GYA remain committed to actively participating in the dialogue that shapes its future, not only as an operator & Association, but as contributors to the broader development of Greek maritime tourism.
